Ca Voi Xanh, one of the largest gas fields discovered in Vietnam, also involves building a pipeline connecting the field to a gas processing plant and associated power and plants.

The Vietnamese government on Nov. 19 held a conference to discuss possible changes to its draft power development plan over 2021-2030 with a vision to 2045, called PDP8, which provides the road map for its power sector including an exhaustive list of proposed projects.

Wind account for around 1% of Vietnam’s installed capacity, with 600 MW (2020).

The draft Power Development Plan 8 (PDP 8) of Vietnam forecasts an installed capacity of 144 GW in 2030, with coal-fired power plants accounting for 31% of the country's installed capacity in 2030.

According to the National Steering Committee for Electricity Development, Vietnam’s wind capacity will reach 6 GW in 2025 and 10 GW in 2030 and solar capacity will grow to 14.4 GW in 2025 and 20 GW in 2030.

Vietnam has 600 MW of wind capacity, including 99 MW offshore, accounting for less than 1% of the country’s installed capacity (69 GW in 2020).

GS Energy said it will build a 3 gigawatt LNG-fired power plant in southern Vietnam in a deal estimated at 3.5 trillion won (US$3 billion).

Vietnam will need about US$320bn to develop its power sector in 2021-2045,

Coal accounts for 35% of Vietnam’s installed capacity, with nearly 20 GW (end of 2019). More than 10 GW of coal projects are currently under construction and 24 GW under development.

The Prime Minister of Vietnam has authorised the 1,200 MW (2x600 MW) Quang Trach 2 coal-fired power project in the Quang Binh province.
