U.S. GAS PRODUCTION UP 10%

U.S. GAS PRODUCTION UP 10%

EIA In February 2018, for the ninth consecutive month, dry natural gas production increased year-to-year from the same month a year ago. The preliminary level for dry natural gas production in February 2018 was 2,203 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 78.7 Bcf/day. This level was 7.1 Bcf/day (10.0%) higher than the February 2017 level of 71.5 Bcf/day. The average daily rate of dry natural gas production for February was the highest for the month since EIA began tracking monthly dry production in 1973.

The estimated natural gas consumption level in February 2018 was 2,670 Bcf, or 95.4 Bcf/day. This level was 14.7% (12.2 Bcf/day) higher than the 2,328 Bcf consumed in February 2017. Natural gas consumption for February was the highest level for the month since 2015.

Year-over-year total consumption of dry natural gas in February 2018 increased in each of the four consuming sectors. Deliveries of natural gas by consuming sector in February 2018 were as follows:

  • Residential deliveries in February 2018 were 687 Bcf, or 24.5 Bcf/day, up 18.2% from 20.8 Bcf/day in February 2017.
  • Commercial deliveries in February 2018 were 420 Bcf, or 15.0 Bcf/day, up 16.3% from 12.9 Bcf/day in February 2017.
  • Industrial deliveries were 690 Bcf, or 24.6 Bcf/day, up 7.0% from 23.0 Bcf/day in February 2017. Industrial deliveries were the highest for the month since EIA began using the current definitions for consuming sectors in 2001.
  • Electric power deliveries were 670 Bcf, or 23.9 Bcf/day, up 19.9% from 20.0 Bcf/day in February 2017. Electric power deliveries were the second highest for February since 2001, when EIA began using the current definitions for consuming sectors.

Natural gas net imports (imports minus exports) were minus 36.0 Bcf, or minus 1.3 Bcf/day, in February 2018, meaning that the United States was a net exporter. Total imports were 8.6 Bcf/day, a decrease of 5.5% from the 9.1 Bcf/day in February 2017. Total exports were 9.9 Bcf/day, an increase of 8.2% from the 9.1 Bcf/day in February 2017. The increase in exports continues to be driven by liquefied natural gas (LNG). LNG exports in February 2018 were 42.3% higher than in February 2017. In February 2018, the United States exported 2.6 Bcf/day of LNG to 11 different countries.

U.S. GAS PRODUCTION UP TO 59%

EIA - U.S. dry natural gas production will increase through 2050 across a wide variety of alternative assumptions about the future. In the Reference case, which is based on current laws and regulations, production grows 59% from 2017 to 2050, starting at 73.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in 2017 and reaching 118 Bcf/d in 2050.

U.S. GAS INVESTMENT: $170 BLN

BLOOMBERG - Gas output will expand by 24 billion cubic feet, or 32 percent, through 2025 from last year, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates. To support that growth, the country’s gas industry needs to spend $170 billion over the next seven years on pipelines, compressor stations, export terminals and other related infrastructure, said Meg Gentle, chief executive officer of gas exporter Tellurian Inc.

U.S. GAS PRODUCTION RECORD

EIA - Two out of three of EIA’s measures of natural gas production in the United States set records in 2017. U.S. natural gas production measured as gross withdrawals reached 90.9 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in 2017, the highest volume on record according to EIA’s Monthly Crude Oil, Lease Condensate, and Natural Gas Production Report. U.S. natural gas production measured as marketed natural gas production also reached a new high, but dry natural gas production did not exceed 2015 levels.

U.S. LNG EXPORTS UP

EIA - U.S. exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) reached 1.94 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in 2017, up from 0.5 Bcf/d in 2016. As LNG exports increased, shipments went to more destinations. U.S. LNG exports in 2017, all of which originated from Louisiana’s Sabine Pass liquefaction terminal, reached 25 countries.

U.S. LNG FOR EUROPE ANEW

OGJ - “It’s at a critical point; $150 billion of new infrastructure will be needed domestically. With all the growth in the Permian, there’s not capacity to ship gas to Louisiana,” Hochstein said. “If governments in both the US and Europe aren’t willing to put infrastructure in place, real progress won’t be made.”

U.S. GAS EXPORT - 2017

EIA - The United States exported more natural gas than it imported in 2017, marking the first time since 1957 that the United States has been a net natural gas exporter. The transition to net exporter occurred as natural gas production in the United States continued to grow, reducing pipeline imports from Canada and increasing exports, both by pipeline and as liquefied natural gas (LNG).
