EU WANT RUSSIA
The crisis in Ukraine highlighted the need for Europe to tighten energy links among member states and cut its dependence on Russia, which supplies 27% of the bloc’s natural gas. To ensure that intergovernmental agreements with Russia don’t breach EU law, the regulator should vet their content during negotiations and not just before deals are adopted.

RUSSIAN GAS STRATEGY
On December 1 2014, during his official visit to Turkey, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the suspension of South Stream, blaming the EU for its “unconstructive” position. In fact, the realization of pipeline had become untenable as a result of various legal, political and financial issues, such as the EU’s Third Energy Package, the Ukraine crisis and the ensuing sanctions over companies involved in South Stream (Stroytransgaz and Gazprombank).

Representatives of five countries - Hungary, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey - met in Budapest on Tuesday, announcing the formation of a working group to facilitate natural gas deliveries - specifically infrastructure development - to their markets from gas emanating from Turkey including possible participation in the Turkish Stream pipeline.
