The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has initiated a tender for 1,200 MW of wind projects under the tranche XII of the interstate transmission-connected (ISTS) programme.

Since India's per-capita energy consumption is about one-third the global average, demand is expected to rise exponentially, creating the need to push both refining expansion as well as clean energy initiatives,

India, the world's third-biggest importer and consumer of crude, meets around 85% of its demand via overseas purchases with Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United States being the top three suppliers. India also imports 55% of its gas demand via imports.

India is more exposed to the international spot coal market as it does not have many longer-term supply contracts. So, when spot prices jump, you see a corresponding decrease in imports

Solar accounts for 9% of India’s installed capacity, with 37.5 GW (end-2020) and over 40 GW in March 2021.

India aims to raise the share of natural gas in the country’s energy mix to 15% by 2030 (from 5.8% in 2020).

India has set an ambitious target of achieving 175 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2022, which includes 100GW of solar.

"With the recovery in the overall demand, refining and other related operational parameters have demonstrated an even more pronounced turnaround compared to the previous year," said Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, chairman of state-run Indian Oil Corp. the country's biggest refiner.

India’s electricity capacity amounts to 412 GW (end of 2020), with the following capacity mix: 68% thermal (57% coal, 7% gas, 3% biomass, 1% oil), 12% hydro, 9% wind and solar each, and 1.6% nuclear.
