UK started last year reducing its support to overseas investments in fossil fuels and totally halted assistance this year amid the clean energy transition that country has embarked on.

The meeting marked the launch of the US-UK Strategic Energy Dialogue, a commitment made by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and President Joe Biden in June 2021, to deepen collaboration in areas such as clean energy technologies, industrial decarbonisation, nuclear energy, and energy security, as well as science and innovation.

The announcement followed the unveiling of the government’s net zero strategy which set out £120 million towards nuclear projects through the Future Nuclear Enabling Fund.

In December 2020, the UK government announced it would begin talks with EDF Energy to enable investment in the planned Sizewell C nuclear power plant project. The latest government statement confirmed these negotiations are ongoing.

It therefore represents a hugely important national capability, enabling industry in the UK and internationally to design, and eventually qualify, components for future commercial fusion power plants.
