Rolls-Royce SMR was selected as the UK government's preferred technology for the country's first small modular reactor (SMR) project in June last year, and GBP2.6 billion was allocated in the 2025 Spending Review to enable this contract and wider programme delivery.

The Innovative Small Modular Reactor (i-SMR) - being developed by a consortium led by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) - is an integrated pressurised water reactor type nuclear power plant with an electrical output of 170 MW for both domestic use and export.

"Poland has the potential to become a European leader in small modular reactor (SMR) technology," said Polish Minister of Energy Miłosz Motyka.

The BWRX-300 is a 300 MWe water-cooled, natural circulation SMR with passive safety systems that leverages the design and licensing basis of GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy's 1500 MW ESBWR boiling water reactor.

Szijjártó said that with the increasing electricity demand there was a need to sustain energy security by increasing nuclear capacity and "SMRs are the ideal solution for us".

The collaboration focuses on a number of critical areas seen as essential for scaling SEALER from prototype to full commercial readiness.

Under the teaming agreement - signed in Seoul on 1 April - the cooperation between Fermi Energia and Samsung C&T will focus on key aspects of the project, including the formation of an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) partnership, site constructability review, cost estimation, and financing strategies.
