BRAZIL'S NEXT ROUND

BRAZIL'S NEXT ROUND

BNA. Brazil's next licensing round for oil and gas blocks will be held next year, the government said on Tuesday.

New auctions could include pre-salt fields off the country's southeast coast, which are estimated to hold up to 35Bboe, fuel secretary Marco Antonio de Almeida said at an event in Rio de Janeiro.

"Next year we are definitely going to have another round. At the latest it will be held by midyear," Almeida said.

Brazil ended a five-year bid round hiatus by staging three auctions within seven months last year.

In December the federal government said future rounds could occur on an annual basis.

But Almeida ruled out a new tender process in 2014 due to unfinished "studies and evaluations" of potential areas.

He said the government must submit studies to hydrocarbons regulator ANP for further analysis before a round is approved.

Almeida revealed the transfer rights area ceded to state-run firm Petrobras (NYSE: PBR) under its 2010 capitalization plan would be considered.

"There is nothing standing in the way," he said. "We are analyzing all basins. When we study the transfer rights area we look very closely at pre-salt, rest assured."

In 2014 Brazil held licensing rounds 11 and 12, in addition to an auction for the ultra-deepwater Libra field - the country's inaugural pre-salt offering.
