CHEVRON WILL ELIMINATE 1,500

CHEVRON WILL ELIMINATE 1,500

Chevron has started to eliminate jobs at its Covington office as part of global layoffs sparked by low oil and gas prices prices. The company has not disclosed how deep the cuts will be.

Chevron spokesman Chris Merrifield said in an email to The Times-Picayune that the company has started to reduce the workforce at its Covington office, but he was "not in a position to provide detail" on the severity of the cuts.

About 730 Chevron employees are based in Covington, or about one-third of the company's Gulf of Mexico business unit.

Merrifield said Chevron is taking action to reduce internal costs in the corporate center and multiple operating units in light of low oil prices.

Chevron announced in late July it will eliminate 1,500 jobs worldwide in order to cut costs.
