U.S. - IRAN SANCTIONS

U.S. - IRAN SANCTIONS

PLATTS - President Donald Trump on Thursday said that Iran is not keeping with the "spirit" of the 2015 nuclear deal as his administration extended existing waivers on sanctions on Iran's oil sector made under the deal.

Calling the Iran deal "one of the worst deals I've ever seen," Trump told reporters Thursday that "at a minimum the spirit of the deal is atrociously kept."

"We are not going to stand what they are doing with our country," Trump said. "They've violated so many different elements and they've also violated the spirit of that deal."

The International Atomic Energy Agency has said repeatedly that Iran is complying with the agreement, as has the United Nations.

Trump has twice certified Iranian compliance with the Iran nuclear deal, in May and in July, but it remains unclear if he will certify compliance when required to do so on October 15.

"You'll see what I'm going to be doing very shortly in October," Trump said.

On Thursday, the administration extended certain sanctions on Iran's oil and banking sectors that have been suspended since the nuclear deal took place in January 2016.

During a briefing, Heather Nauert, a State Department spokeswoman, said the sanctions were being suspended in order to "maintain some flexibility" as the administration continues to review its Iran policy.

"We continue to look at some of the reckless, malign behavior of the Iranian regime," Nauert said.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Thursday that the administration was still reviewing and developing its policy on Iran, but said Iran is "in default of these expectations" of the nuclear deal.

Iran's oil production, which fell to 2.8 million b/d in 2015, has increased by over 1 million b/d since the nuclear deal went into effect. Iranian crude oil output averaged 3.83 million b/d in August, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
