WNN - Nuclear energy has faced serious challenges in recent years because of several factors: competition from low gas prices, subsidised renewables and slow growth in electricity demand in certain markets. But because of several powerful forces we are seeing signs that this year nuclear energy will come roaring back.

WNA - France derives about 75% of its electricity from nuclear energy, due to a long-standing policy based on energy security. This share may be reduced to 50% by 2025. France is the world's largest net exporter of electricity due to its very low cost of generation, and gains over €3 billion per year from this. The country has been very active in developing nuclear technology. Reactors and especially fuel products and services have been a significant export. About 17% of France's electricity is from recycled nuclear fuel.

WNA - Apart from adding capacity, utilisation of existing plants has improved markedly since 2000. In the 1990s capacity factors averaged around 60%, but they have steadily improved since and in 2010, 2011 and 2014 were above 81%. Balakovo was the best plant in 2011 with 92.5%, and again in 2014 with 85.1%.

RUSSIA - FRANCE NUCLEAR PARTNERSHIP
ROSATOM - On May 24, 2018 ROSATOM and French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission signed the strategic document on French-Russian partnership in the peaceful uses of atomic energy.
In witness of Presidents of the Russian Federation and the French Republic Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron the document was signed by Director General of ROSATOM and Administrator General of French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission François Jacq.
The document is called for to give a new impetus to the cooperation and express mutual intention to develop cooperation in the area of energy efficiency and renewables. It undersigns that both parties share general approaches to nuclear power development and its role in achieving goal of the Paris Agreement as part of the UN Framework Convention of Climate Change. It was noted that the nuclear power is a high-technology, modern, reliable and economically effective source of energy generation which ensures, along with renewables, solutions for greenhouse release constraints.
The parties are to strengthen technical and commercial interaction if the sphere of energy efficiency and alternative energy sources, development of energy accumulation systems, development of fast neutron nuclear power, engineering and equipment supplies for nuclear power plants, supply of nuclear fuel for commercial and scientific purposes, processing of spent nuclear fuel and reuse of recovered materials.
ROSATOM and French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission are intended to jointly implement industrial facilities in third countries.
The document also provides for scientific exchanges between students of nuclear educational establishments and broadening contacts between employees of research nuclear centers.
