RUSSIA'S NUCLEAR FOR IRAN STOPPED

РУССКИЙ АТОМ ДЛЯ ИРАНА ОСТАНОВЛЕН

TVEL - 06.12.2019 - In light of incoming Russian and foreign media inquiries, TVEL, Joint-Stock Company ("TVEL"), considers it necessary to comment on its involvement in the Fordow project in Iran.

Since 2017, TVEL experts have been engaged in modifying two gas centrifuge cascades at the Fordow facility, intended for producing stable isotopes (xenon and tellurium) for medical purposes. The works were carried out in compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action dating to July 14, 2015 (JCPA); the International Atomic Energy Agency and the JCPA Joint Commission were regularly updated on project progress.

On November 6, 2019 the Islamic Republic of Iran withdrew from some of its JCPA obligations and fed uranium hexafluoride (UF6) into two gas centrifuge cascades located in the same room as the cascades meant to be reengineered for stable medical isotope production. This makes it technologically impossible for TVEL to be further engaged in works at the Fordow facility. Uranium enrichment and stable medical isotope production cannot be sustained in the same room. Air and equipment are exposed to UF6 leftovers, making the produced stable medical isotopes unsuitable for medical purposes.

Therefore, the Russian side cancelled the works under the Fordow project. The Iranian side had been informed of this decision.
