RUSSIA'S GAS FOR EUROPE "IN PRINCIPLE"
PLATTS - 19 Dec 2019 - London — Russia and Ukraine have agreed "in principle" a new gas-transit deal, with the details to be finalized on Friday, senior European Commission official Maros Sefcovic said Thursday.
The agreement should end uncertainty over whether Russian gas supplies via Ukraine to Europe could be disrupted from the start of 2020.
After hours of talks brokered by the European Commission in Berlin, Sefcovic said: "I am very glad to say we have reached agreement in principle on all key elements, which is very positive news for Europe, for Russia, for Ukraine and for the gas market."
Sefcovic said the agreement in principle would be discussed in Moscow and Kyiv, and would be approved by the two governments before proceeding to the formal signature.
Russian energy minister Alexander Novak said the parties had prepared the draft of a protocol.
"We only need to approve it and very soon we will get the signatures," Novak said.
The existing gas supply and transit deal between Russia's Gazprom and Ukraine's Naftogaz expires at the end of 2019 and there had been concern that, without a new contract to take effect from January 1, Russian gas transit to Europe via Ukraine could be disrupted.
Russia and Ukraine held several rounds of bilateral talks in the past few weeks in a bid to break the deadlock over gas transit from 2020.
The last round of trilateral talks involving the EC was held on October 28.
Sefcovic was previously the EC vice president for energy union, but since December 1 he is the EC's vice president for Inter-institutional Relations and Foresight.

The meeting was focused on the current issues of cooperation between the companies. Particular attention was paid to natural gas deliveries. The parties noted the contribution of the Nord Stream gas pipeline to the reliability and safety of gas supplies to consumers in Germany and Europe.
