GLOBAL ENERGY INVESTMENT 2018: $1.8 TLN

IEAGlobal energy investment totalled more than USD 1.8 trillion in 2018, a level similar to 2017. For the third year in a row, the power sector attracted more investment than the oil and gas industry. The biggest jump in overall energy investment was in the United States, where it was boosted by higher spending in upstream supply, particularly shale, but also electricity networks. The increase narrowed the gap between the United States and China, which remained the world's largest investment destination.

Net income for 43 U.S. oil producers totaled $28 billion in 2018, a five-year high. Based on net income, 2018 was the most profitable year for these U.S. oil producers since 2013, despite crude oil prices that were lower in 2018 than in 2013 on an annual average basis.

OIL PRICE: NEAR $61 YET
Brent crude was down 46 cents, or 0.8%, at $60.84 a barrel at 0639 GMT, after rising 4.7% on Tuesday, the biggest percentage gain since December. U.S. oil was down 62 cents, or 1.1%, at $56.48 a barrel, having risen 4% the previous session, the most in just over a month.
