RUSSIA'S NUCLEAR INVESTMENT $580 MLN
NUCNET - 13 April 2020 - Russia's Central Design and Technological Institute, a subsidiary of state nuclear fuel company Tvel, has won a government contract to design an experimental synchrotron for research in physics, chemistry, geology, biology and medicine.
The Siberian Circular Photon Source, or Skif, will be built at Koltsovo, a "science city" in the Novosibirsk region of southern Russia. It will be one of the latest generation of synchrotron radiation sources.
The project was approved by a federal government order in 2018. Tvel said the synchrotron and related infrastructure are scheduled to be commissioned in 2024. Total investment in the project will be more than $580m.
A synchrotron is a particular type of particle accelerator, in which the accelerating particle beam travels around a fixed closed-loop path.
Scientists at Koltsovo will use synchrotron radiation to study matter on the atomic level. It will be used for materials and medical research.
