NETHERLANDS NUCLEAR POWER

NETHERLANDS NUCLEAR POWER

ENERDATA - 24 Sep 2020 - The Dutch government has decided to organise a public consultation on building new nuclear power plants to assess under which conditions market parties are interested in investing in nuclear power plants in the Netherlands, and to investigate what kind of public support would be needed, and in which regions there is interest in the construction of a new nuclear plant.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate has just commissioned a study that argues that atomic energy can be a serious option in addition to wind and solar energy. According to the study, the costs of nuclear energy would be comparable to wind and solar if all costs (extra network costs, costs for balancing the grid, connection costs) are included in the same way. In addition, the study claims extending the life of a nuclear power plant would generally be the cheapest way to save CO2. EPZ owns and operates the 485 MW Borssele nuclear plant in The Netherlands, which was commissioned in 1973.

NUCLEAR ENERGY FOR CLIMATE
The latest IAEA annual projections show that nuclear power will continue to play a key role in the world’s low-carbon energy mix, with global nuclear electrical capacity seen nearly doubling by 2050 in our high case scenario. Climate change mitigation remains a key potential driver for maintaining and expanding the use of nuclear power.
