U.S. COAL WILL UP 22%

U.S. COAL WILL UP 22%

ENERDATA19 Oct 2021 - The US Energy Information Administration forecasts that coal-fired generation in the United States will increase by 22% between 2020 and 2021 due to higher natural gas prices and relatively stable coal prices. This would be the first increase in coal generation since 2014. However, this rise in coal-fired generation is not likely to continue. In 2022, coal-fired generation is expected to decrease by 5% in response to continuing retirements of generating capacity at coal power plants and slightly lower natural gas prices.

In 2020, coal-fired generation declined by a quarter to 858 TWh, due to a drop in electricity demand and low natural gas prices, accounting for 20% of the country's electricity mix. Coal-fired capacity declined by 27% since 2011 to 237 GW in 2020.
