SAUDI, EGYPT WIND POWER 1.1 GW

ENERDATA17 Nov 2021 - The Council of Ministers of the Egyptian government has approved a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Saudi power project developer ACWA Power for a 1,100 MW wind project in Egypt, to be developed on an independent power producer (IPP) basis. No further details on the project were disclosed.

In April 2021, ACWA Power signed a 25-year PPA, network connection contract and usufruct agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) for a 200 MW solar PV power plant at Kom Ombo, in Upper Egypt on the river Nile. The US$156m project, owned by ACWA Power, is expected to be commissioned in the third quarter of 2022.

Egypt targets 20% of electricity production from renewables in 2022 (10% achieved in 2020) and 42% for 2030, with 25% from solar, 14% from wind, and 2% from hydropower.
