INDIA'S HYDROPOWER +30 GW

ENERDATA14 Dec 2021 - India plans to add 79 hydropower projects with a total capacity of 30 GW, including 11 pumped-storage projects totalling 8.7 GW, during the period 2019-2020 to 2029-30. Of this amount, five projects totalling 1,023 MW have already been commissioned and another 12.6 GW are currently under construction. As India aims to transition to a net zero economy, it will seek to raise the nuclear power capacity from the current 6,780 MW to 22,480 MW by 2031. Yet, over 31,665 MW of coal-fired power capacity are in various phases of construction.

India aims to reach a non-fossil energy capacity of 500 GW by 2030. Hydropower accounts for 12% of India's total capacity, with 50.5 GW (2020). Almost 95 GW of new hydropower projects are in various phases of development.
