WIND ENERGY FOR U.S. 2.5 GW

WIND ENERGY FOR U.S. 2.5 GW

RENEWABLES NOWFebruary 2 - Northern Indiana Public Service Co LLC (NIPSCO), a subsidiary of NiSource Inc (NYSE:NI), on Monday announced the completion of two wind parks in Indiana with a combined capacity of 502 MW.

NextEra Energy Resources LLC has completed the 400-MW Jordan Creek Wind Energy Center, which now generates power in Benton and Warren counties, near Williamsport. NIPSCO will be buying its output under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA), but the asset will continue to be owned by NextEra.

According to John Ketchum, president and CEO of NextEra Energy Resources, the company will continue to work with NIPSCO, with plans to realise a number of solar and battery storage projects in Indiana in 2022 and 2023.

At the same time, EDP Renewables North America LLC has finished building the 102-MW Rosewater wind farm in White County. In this case, NIPSCO is a shareholder in the joint venture that owns and operates the facility, together with the EDP unit and an unnamed tax equity investor. The electric distribution firm noted that tax equity investing is a new concept for the state of Indiana.

NIPSCO wants to become 100% coal-free by 2028 and for this reason will be focusing on utilising natural gas and hydroelectric generation. In addition to the two newly-completed wind parks, the utility expects to add eight more renewable energy projects to its portfolio over the next three years. More details are available in the table below.
