SPAIN RENEWABLES ELECTRICITY 59%

SPAIN RENEWABLES ELECTRICITY 59%

RNMarch 2  - Renewables in Spain produced 58.9% of the nation’s electricity in February, Spanish grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE) said in the latest estimates report.

Except on February 4 when it dropped to 44.5%, the share of renewables in the total daily power production stayed above 50% throughout the month and twice reached 68.4%, REE said.

In January, the renewables share was estimated at 52.3%.

The boost was led by wind farms, which increased production by 48.6% year-on-year to 6,346 GWh.

A snapshot of the February power mix is presented below:

Technology: Share in February: Estimated production in GWh: Y/Y change January-February share combined:
Wind 29.9% 6,346 48.6% 29.5%
Hydro 21.6% 4,577 61.2% 19%
Solar PV 4.6% 980 0.7% 4%
Solar CSP 0.7% 150 -34.0% 0.6%
Nuclear 20.6% 4,358 -10.8% 21%
Cogeneration 8.7% 1,855 -17% 9.4%
Combined cycle 7.1% 1,502 -48.1% 9.3%
Coal 0.9% 185 -77.5% 1.6%

Spain’s demand for electricity dropped by 3.5% on the year to 20,254 GWh. The drop is more pronounced, -5.2%, when taking into account calendar effects, temperatures and 2020 being a leap year, REE said.

In mainland Spain, the demand was estimated at 19,276 GWh, 2.8% lower compared to February 2020.

Demand for power on the Balearic Islands fell by 10.4% to some 361,279 MWh, while on the Canary Islands, REE puts the demand at 584,289 MWh, down by 17.2% on the year.
