RUSSIA'S CLIMATE CHANGE
ENERDATA - 27 May 2021 - The Russian parliament is expected to pass the law on climate change by end-2021. The law on climate change will obliges large emitters to report their emission levels to regulators. The measure concerns companies that emit more than 150,000 tCO2/year before 2024 and more than 50,000 tCO2/year after 2024, affecting large companies in the power sector, non-ferrous and ferrous metallurgy, oil production and refining, coal and gas industries and mechanical engineering. The State Duma, Russia’s lower house, approved the text in April 2021. The bill is a first step to create legislation that will allow to regulate CO2 emissions in Russia. The country aims to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2030 by 70% compared to 1990 level. Russia’s energy-related CO2 emissions have increased by 9% since 2016 and are now 21% below their 1990 level.
