SOUTH AFRICA'S COAL ENERGY 4.8 GW

SOUTH AFRICA'S COAL ENERGY 4.8 GW

ENERDATA 20 May 2021 - South Africa's national power utility Eskom plans to commission the last unit of its 4,800 MW Kusile coal-fired power plant in 2023, instead of late 2022. The US$7bn power plant is located near the existing Kendal facility in the Nkangala District, Mpumalanga. It consists of six units rated 800 MW each, of which three are already operational: Kusile-1 and Kusile-2 were commissioned in 2017 and 2020, respectively, while Kusile-3 was synchronized to the grid in 2019 and commissioned in March 2021. The three remaining units are currently under construction. The project is part of the effort made by Eskom to ensure security of power supply in South Africa after periods of mandatory load-shedding caused by a lack of generating capacity in the country.
