CHINA'S HYDROPOWER 16 GW
ENERDATA - 29 Jun 2021 - China Three Gorges Power Corporation (CTGPC) has started to produce power from the first two 1 GW units of the 16 GW Baihetan hydropower plant on the Jinsha River, the upper section of the Yangtze, between the borders of the southwest provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan (China). The power plant consists of 16 turbines of 1,000 MW each and is expected to have an average annual power output of 62.4 TWh. The dam construction works already started in 2008 and the construction of the power plant began in August 2017. The project’s core structures will include a 289 metres tall arch dam with a crest elevation of 827 metres, flood discharge structures, water diversion and power generation facilities. The remaining 14 generation units are expected to start operations by July 2022 and the project should be fully commissioned by the end of 2022.
