CHINA'S HYDROPOWER UP BY 10.2 GW

ENERDATA17 Jun 2021 - China has fully commissioned its 10.2 GW Wudongde hydropower project on the Jinsha river in southern China, with the start of the 12th and last generator. The project was developed by the state-owned China Three Gorges Project Corporation (CTG), for a total investment of CNY120bn (US$18.8bn). Construction started in 2015 near the border of the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces and the project produced its first power in June 2020. It should generate nearly 39 TWh/year of electricity.

Hydropower accounts for 16% China’s installed capacity with 370 GW in 2020. More than 31 GW of hydro projects are currently under construction and 85 GW under development.
