MOZAMBIQUE SELLS HYDROPOWER 1.5 GW

MOZAMBIQUE SELLS HYDROPOWER 1.5 GW

ENERDATA23 Jun 2021 - Mozambique plans to sell a majority stake the 1.5 GW Mpanda Nkuwa hydropower plant on the Zambezi river in the western province of Tete. A request for proposal will be issued in 2021, and the authorities will take several months to select the winner. The Mozambican state will participate in the project through the state-owned power utility Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), and through Hydroelecrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), which operates the Cahora Bassa dam.

Mozambique aims to reach financial close on the US$2.4bn project (up to US$5bn including 40% for the power transmission line, with 65%-70% funded by foreign investors) in 2024 and to launch construction the same year. Commissioning is expected in 2030-2031 and most of the output of the dam will be sold to South Africa.
