FRANCE'S RENEWABLES €30.5 BLN

FRANCE'S RENEWABLES €30.5 BLN

ENERDATA28 Jul 2021 - The European Commission has approved, under EU State aid rules, a €30.5bn French aid scheme to support renewable electricity production. The scheme grants support to electricity produced from renewables, including solar, onshore wind and hydropower. The measures include seven types of tenders for a total of 34 GW of new renewable capacity that will be organised between 2021 and 2026 and the support takes the form of a premium on top of the electricity market price. Selected projects will receive an aid for a maximum of two decades after they are connected to the grid.

As part of its National Energy and Climate Plan (2020), France set its 2030 target for renewables at 33% of the final energy consumption. The country missed its 2020 target set in the Renewable Energy Directive (2009) for 23% of renewables in final consumption (19.1% in 2020), especially for electricity (24.8% in 2020 vs a target of 27%) and heating (23.3% vs 33%).
