NUCLEAR FOR SOUTH AFRICA 2.5 GW
ENERDATA - 27 Aug 2021 - The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has approved a long-term program to build new nuclear power units (South Africa). The country aims to procure 2,500 MW of new nuclear capacity to come online after 2030. The procurement process should be completed by 2024.
In June 2020, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy published a Request for Information (RFI) for a 2,500 MW nuclear new-build programme. The RFI is expected to provide the government with insight into the cost of the programme, possible ownership structures, cost recovery, the end user cost, and the sustainability of the programme. In 2018, the government abandoned a 9,600 MW nuclear expansion project.
South Africa is the only African nation with an operational nuclear power plant. The 1,860 MW Koeberg nuclear power plant, near Cape Town, has two 930 MW reactors that were commissioned in 1984 and 1985, respectively, and that are currently licensed until 2024.
