ARGENTINA, CHINA ENERGY DEAL $35 BLN

ENERDATA27 Jan 2022 - Argentina is expected to sign a five-year US$35bn infrastructure programme with China. The plan should include the Atucha III nuclear project (740 MW, US$8.5bn), the Néstor Kirchner (950 MW) and Jorge Cepernic (360 MW) dams worth US$4bn and the Cauchari solar plant (715 MW, US$400m). The agreement in principle could also comprise the modernisation of the railway network.

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) won a contract in 2016 to build the Atucha II nuclear reactor, but the project was postponed. Similarly, China's Ghezouba Group signed a contract in 2013 to build the Néstor Kirchner and Jorge Cepernic hydropower plants; the Néstor Kirchner dam is under construction, but the Jorge Cepernic project is frozen.
