BRAZIL ELECTRICITY INVESTMENT $97 BLN

ENERDATA26 Jan 2022 - The Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy has initiated a public consultation on the Ten-Year Energy Expansion Plan 2031 (PTE 2031), which foresees the investment of BRL528bn (US$97bn) in the electricity sector over the 2021-2031 period, including BRL292bn (US$54bn) in centralised generation, BRL135bn (US$25bn) in distributed generation and BRL101bn (US$19bn) in transmission. The country's installed capacity is expected to increase by 38% from around 200 GW in 2021 to 275 GW in 2031, with 83% of renewables and 17% of non-renewables. The centralised capacity is forecast to increase by 23% to 220 GW in 2031, while the distributed capacity, entirely renewable, should increase 5-fold to 37 GW. In addition, the self-generation capacity could reach 18 GW by 2031 (+38% over 2021-2031). Overall, the share of hydropower in the installed capacity should decline from 58% in 2021 to 45% in 2031, to the advantage of renewable auto-production (from 8% to 17%), solar (from 2% to 4%), and nuclear (from 1% to 2%).
