EUROPEAN WIND CAPACITY +11 GW

ENERDATA - 25 Feb 2022 - According to WindEurope, 11 GW of new wind capacity was added in the 27 EU countries in 2021; including non-EU countries, Russia and Ukraine, 17.4 GW of new wind power capacities were installed in 2021, raising the region's total installed capacity to 236 GW. 81% of the new wind installations in the region in 2021 were onshore wind (14 GW). Most of the new wind installations took place in the United Kingdom (2,645 MW, including 2,317 MW of offshore wind and 328 MW of onshore wind), followed by Sweden (2,104 MW of onshore wind) and Germany (1,925 MW of onshore wind). Four other countries added more than 1 GW of wind capacity, namely Turkey (1,400 MW of onshore wind), the Netherlands (1,344 MW, including 952 MW onshore and 392 MW offshore), France (1,192 MW onshore) and Russia (1,139 MW onshore). 

Europe is expected to instal 116 GW of new wind plants over the period from 2022-2026, i.e., 23 GW/year on average. Three-quarters of these new capacity additions will be onshore wind, and the growth should be spurred by Germany (+19.7 GW of new onshore capacity and +5.4 GW of offshore capacity), the United Kingdom (+15 GW), France (12 GW), Spain (10 GW) and Sweden (7 GW).
