HUNGARY RENEWABLES UP BY 24%

ENERDATA23 Feb 2022 - Power generation in Hungary increased by 2.5% in 2021 to 35.8 TWh, according the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH). Almost 64% of the power generation came from carbon-free sources, including 45% from nuclear, 26% from gas, and 19% from renewables. Nuclear power generation remained stable in 2021 at nearly 16 TWh (-0.4%), while gas-fired generation rose by 3.9% to 9.4 TWh. Renewable electricity generation increased by 24% to 6.9 TWh, including 3.8 TWh from solar (+54% compared to 2020), i.e. nearly 11% of the total power mix, and 1.8 TWh from biomass (+6.9%). In addition, electricity demand rose by 5.3% to 43.7 TWh, and imports by 4.1% to 20 TWh; the share of net imports in total consumption reached 26%.
