ENERDATA1 Feb 2022 - The Italian energy agency Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE) has published the results of the seventh auction for renewable capacity under the country’s new renewable support scheme. A total quota of 4,825 MW was offered but the call for projects was largely under subscribed, with only 1,829 MW of bids submitted (around 38% of the available capacity). In total, the country allocated only 1,470 MW of capacity (30% of the available capacity).

The auction for large renewable projects (>1 MW), with 3,897 MW of capacity available, attracted 108 bids totalling 1,352 MW and only 84 bids totalling 1,093 MW were admitted (28% of the available capacity). Most of the projects were submitted in the "group A" for solar PV and onshore wind power projects (975 MW). In addition, the country offered 928 MW under the register for small renewable plants (<1 MW): 1,048 bids totalling 477 MW were submitted but only 840 bids totalling 376 MW were selected (41% of the capacity). The previous auction had only attracted 821 MW of bids for a quota of 3,316 MW (25% of available capacity).

In addition, GSE has launched an eighth tender to allocate 3,350 MW of renewables not assigned in the prior rounds, including 2,346 MW of wind and solar, 110 MW of hydro and 427 MW for repowering wind and hydro. Bids are open until 2 March 2022. The tender’s results will be released on 31 May 2022.

Algeria and Libya may reduce deliveries to Europe in the next two to three years because of political instability, lack of investment and contract renegotiations, according to Carlo Malacarne, CEO of Italy’s Snam, Europe’s biggest gas transmission operator by pipeline length and storage capacity. Its Italian network includes entry points for gas arriving from North Africa and Russia.
