SWITZERLAND ENERGY RESERVES
ENERDATA - 21 Feb 2022 - The Swiss Federal Council has approved a set of measures to improve the country's supply security during winter. The country will create a so-called hydropower reserve, requiring the operators of pumped-storage hydropower plants to retain a certain amount of power that can be called up when required against payment. In addition, Switzerland plans to build two to three gas-fired plants with a total capacity of 1 GW as part of a gas reserve. These gas-fired peaking plants would only be used in exceptional circumstances. Switzerland is expected to become more dependent on electricity imports from 2025 onwards and thus more vulnerable to supply bottlenecks in the event of power plant failures.
