RUSSIAN OIL FOR EUROPE
BLOOMBERG - March, 22, 2022 - Germany and Hungary are putting the brakes on a potential EU embargo on Russian oil, deepening differences in the bloc over how to further punish Moscow for its relentless attacks on Ukraine. Speaking outside the meeting of EU foreign ministers yesterday, Lithuanian envoy Gabrielius Landsbergis said it was “unavoidable” to start discussing an oil embargo because it’s Russia's biggest source of revenue. But Germany’s Annalena Baerbock stressed member states have different dependencies, making it difficult to cut it off from one day to the next. Her Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto said “sanctioning energy is definitely a red line for us.” Russia warned that such a move would hit Europeans hard. The comments come ahead of gatherings of U.S. and EU leaders this week, where more sanctions are likely to be discussed. EU leaders are also expected to talk about how to curb soaring power and gas prices.
