GREECE ENERGY PLAN CHANGES

GREECE ENERGY PLAN CHANGES

ENERDATA7 Apr 2022 - Greece has announced various measures in a context of energy crisis. The Ministry of Energy and Environment plans to double lignite production and to review its phase-out plan for lignite-fired power plants. Lignite-fired power plants are expected to be a major pillar to ensure smooth electricity supply in Greece in case of gas flow disruptions. As well, five gas-fired units could be converted to oil. The country could also focus on accelerating gas exploration in the Ionian Sea and west of Crete; the country has reaffirmed its energy cooperation with Cyprus and Israel in the eastern Mediterranean region.

In addition, in an attempt to mitigate rising gas prices, state subsidies for gas consumed by households and businesses will be doubled in April 2022, from €20/MWh to €40/MWh; this measure should benefit to 540,000 households and thousands of companies. In addition, the state-owned gas distribution network operator DEPA will extend a discount for industrial producers and hospitals.
