HYDROGEN ENERGY FOR EGYPT 4 GW

ENERDATA - 26 Apr 2022 - Masdar and Hassan Allam Utilities have signed preliminary agreements with several parastatals in Egypt to set up a strategic platform that targets an electrolyser capacity of 4 GW in Egypt by 2030, and output of up to 480,000 t/year of green hydrogen. The two companies aim to build green hydrogen production plants in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and on the Mediterranean coast in Egypt. The Memorandums of Understanding were signed with entities including the General Authority for Suez Canal Economic Zone, New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt.

In the first phase of the project, Masdar and Hassan Allam Utilities plan to build a green hydrogen manufacturing plant, which would be operational by 2026, producing 100,000 t/year of e-methanol for bunkering in the Suez Canal. The electrolyser projects in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and on the Mediterranean could be extended to up to 4 GW by 2030 to produce 2.3 Mt/year of green ammonia for export as well as supply green hydrogen for local industries.
