RUSSIAN ELECTRICITY FOR FINLAND IS STOPPED
ENERDATA- 17 May 2022 - RAO Nordic, a subsidiary of the Russian energy supplier Inter RAO, has decided to suspend deliveries of electricity to Finland as from 14 May 2022, claiming that Finland had not paid for previous deliveries. Russia has recently threatened to take retaliatory measures after Finland expressed its intention of joining NATO.
The Finnish transmission system operator (TSO) Fingrid estimates that there is no threat to the sufficiency of electricity in the country since electricity imports from Russia covered about 10% of Finland’s total consumption before the suspension. The lack of electricity imports from Russia will be compensated by ramping up imports from Sweden and generating more in Finland.
Finland’s electricity generation self-sufficiency is improving thanks to the development of wind power, as around 2 GW of wind capacity are expected to come online in 2022, and nuclear. The country is even set to become fully self-sufficient by 2023.
