TUNISIA RENEWABLES 2 GW

TUNISIA RENEWABLES 2 GW

ENERDATA30 May 2022 - Tunisia will launch international tenders in June 2022 in order to build 2 GW of renewable power capacity on its territory.

Tunisia already granted licenses to three international companies in March 2022 to build 500 MW of renewable energy capacity. Tunisia, which produced about 5% of its power from renewables in 2020, aims to produce 30% of electricity from renewables by 2030. Developing renewables could enable Tunisia to be less reliant on imports.

Indeed, the country is currently facing a financial and political crisis, and the cost of energy has drastically increased in the previous months. Tunisia’s gas purchases from Algerian gas company Sonatrach may reach US$1.5bn this year and the total bill is set to reach US$2.6bn (up US$1.5bn from last year).
