ENERDATA - 19 JUNE 2024 - The Iranian Government has unveiled a comprehensive plan for the construction of 15 GW of solar PV power plants across Iran. The proposed plan will seek approval from the country’s Economic Council and should require US$8.3bn of private sector investment, in three phases. Around 80% of the investment for the implementation of this program would be made by the National Development Fund.
Iran is also planning to increase its solar panel production capacity, as the government plans to inaugurate a 1.8 GW solar panel production line in the near future, helping to increase the country’s production capacity to 2.3 GW a year.
As of end 2023, solar represented only about 1% of Iran’s installed capacity with 1 GW, and only 0.2% of its power generation with 729 GWh. The country currently has over 5 GW of solar capacity under development.
