INDIA RENEWABLES 217 GW

INDIA RENEWABLES 217 GW

ENERDATA - 24 January 2025 - The Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has announced the achievements seen within its renewable energy sector, announcing that the country’s non-fossil fuel based energy capacity reached 217.62 GW at the end of 2024.

Solar energy dominated India’s renewable energy growth in 2024, accounting for 47% of the total renewable energy capacity installed during the year, with the addition of 24.5 GW (18.5 GW of utility-scale solar capacity, 4.59 GW of new rooftop solar, and 1.48 GW of off-grid solar). In addition, India added 3.4 GW of new wind capacity in 2024, with Gujarat (1,250 MW), Karnataka (1,135 MW), and Tamil Nadu (980 MW), accounting for 98% of the new wind capacity additions.

The surge on renewable capacity is attributed by the ministry to government incentives, policy reforms and an increasing investment on strategic sectors such as hydrogen, manufacturing of domestic solar PV and wind turbines, as well as on the financing of interstate transmission systems to evacuate power from renewable rich states.

India aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030, with an intermediate target of 358 GW at the end of 2026.
