BRICS NUCLEAR PLATFORM

BRICS NUCLEAR PLATFORM

N - October 3, 2025 - BRICS holds summit in Moscow

The annual conference of the BRICS Nuclear Energy Platform was held in Moscow as part of the World Atomic Week (WAW) international forum. The event was attended by the heads of companies and organisations of Platform’s participants and partners from Brazil, Vietnam, Egypt, Iran, China, South Africa, the UAE, Ethiopia, Turkey, and the ASEAN Energy Centre. The conference heard addresses by International Atomic Energy Agency Deputy Director General Mikhail Chudakov and Director General of the World Nuclear Association, Dr Sama Bilbao y León among others.

At a conference interim results were presented and plans for 2026 determined. Platform document was adopted defining key areas of work: developing human resources, attracting funding for nuclear power projects, sustainability of supply chains, promoting reactor construction and nuclear fuel cycle technologies, ensuring public acceptance of nuclear power, and others.

Elsie Poole, Chief Coordinator of the BRICS Nuclear Energy Platform, noted the growing role of BRICS and partner countries in shaping the new global energy architecture. She said BRICS countries account for almost a third of the world’s operating NPPs and more than 70% of NPPs under construction. By 2030, they will account for at least two-thirds of the global NPP fleet.

The BRICS Nuclear Energy Platform was established to strengthen corporate-level cooperation aimed at promoting nuclear energy as an environmentally friendly source. Nine participants from companies and government agencies in BRICS member and partner countries signed statements in support of the Platform.

These included China National Nuclear Corporation; the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa), South Africa’s Eskom Holdings, Iran’s Nuclear Power Production & Development Company; the Brazilian Association for the Development of Nuclear Activities, the Bolivian Agency for Nuclear Energy, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Innovation & Technology and Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority as well as Rosatom.

During the opening addresses to WAW, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi proposed a memorandum of understanding between the agency and the BRICS’ New Development Bank. Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that the New Development Bank established by the BRICS countries had confirmed its readiness to finance nuclear projects earlier in the year. He recalled that Russia had initiated creation of the BRICS Nuclear Energy Platform in 2024.
