RUSSIAN GAS FOR CHINA
RPA - February 4, 2026 - Gazprom’s CEO Alexei Miller has been discussing collaboration in existing and prospective projects with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) Board Chairman Dai Houliang in Beijing, according to Gazprom.
A company statement says, “The reliable operation of the Power of Siberia gas pipeline, the eastern route, was particularly noted. Gas supplies via the pipeline totaled 38.8 billion cubic meters in 2025, exceeding Gazprom’s initial contractual obligations, thus demonstrating the demand for Russian energy in China, as well as the high level of trust between the two companies. The current status of work on the Far Eastern route for Russian gas supplies to China was discussed at the meeting. Project implementation is on schedule. Gas deliveries will begin in January 2027. Miller and Dai also discussed prospects for other areas of bilateral cooperation.”
Agreements were reached to boost supply volumes via the Power of Siberia pipeline from 38 bcm per year to 44 bcm per year and to increase supply volumes via the Far Eastern route from 10 bcm per year to 12 bcm per year.
A legally binding memorandum was also signed on constructing the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline and the Soyuz-Vostok transit pipeline via Mongolia. The route should allow 50 bcm of gas per year to be delivered from Russia via Mongolia.
In contrast, Russian gas supplies to the European Union fell to roughly 18 billion bcm last year. Household gas prices in the EU also varied considerably during 2025. In H1, the average household natural gas price in the EU was €11.43 per 100 kWh. In 2025, natural gas prices for households in China were approximately €4.23 per 100 kWh, according to data from GlobalPetrolPrices.com. This means that household prices for gas in China are nearly 3 times less expensive than in the European Union.
