EUROPEAN GAS PRICES UP AGAIN

EUROPEAN GAS PRICES UP AGAIN

BLOOMBERG - March 23, 2026 - European natural gas futures resumed gains as traders watched the US and Iran exchange threats over the Strait of Hormuz, adding nervousnesses to an already volatile market.

Benchmark contracts rose more than 5% in early trading, wiping out the previous session’s decline. On Saturday, US President Donald Trump gave Iran a two-day deadline to reopen Hormuz or have its power plants bombed, to which Iran responded that it would attack key infrastructure across the Middle East if he followed through.

The war is now in its fourth week with no sign of de-escalation. Shipping through Hormuz has effectively come to a standstill this month, cutting off almost 20% of global liquefied natural gas flows, while the biggest LNG plant in Qatar is shut down and about 17% of its capacities are damaged. The country has said it could take up to five years to return to pre-war levels.

Gas prices in Europe and Asia may have to “rally further” given a larger negative impact on global LNG supply, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analysts including Samantha Dart said in a note Sunday. “Last week’s widespread attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East suggest that energy supply disruptions will last longer than we previously expected,” they said, further lifting their price forecasts.

Traders are also closely watching gas stockpiling in Europe as the continent needs large amounts of LNG this year to rebuild its depleted inventories. The European Union’s energy chief has told member states to start filling gas storage early in order to avoid supply competition over the summer. Governments should also lower their storage filling targets to 80% and make the most of the flexibilities offered by EU law, Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen wrote in a letter, seen by Bloomberg News.

Dutch front-month futures, Europe’s gas benchmark, traded 4.7% higher at €62.02 a megawatt-hour by 8:33 a.m. in Amsterdam.

EUROPEAN BAN OF RUSSIAN GAS: ROADBLOCK
While strengthening oversight over Russian gas imports, the Proposal’s transparency and traceability measures place a significant burden on importers and other stakeholders, while risking regulatory overreach – particularly if over-zealously implemented – thus potentially increasing costs and preventing legitimate gas imports from entering the EU.

EUROPE WITHOUT RUSSIAN ENERGY
"Despite the significant progress achieved under the REPowerEU Plan and via sanctions since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, in 2024 the EU saw a rebound in Russian gas imports," the EC said.
