AUSTRALIA'S GREEN HYDROGEN PROJECT 6 GW
ENERDATA - 15 April 2026 - The Australian government plans to fast-track the development of the Murchison Green Hydrogen Project in Western Australia, Australia (Australian government press release, 09/04/2026). The announcement came with the promotion of the country’s Investor Front Door program, which aims to streamline interactions between the government and project developers to fast-track major projects of national interest, with the green hydrogen facility making part of the program’s first pilot projects.
Developed by Danish investment fund Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), the Murchison facility will consist of up to 6 GW of solar and onshore wind capacity coupled with a 600 MW/1,200 MWh BESS to power 3 GW of electrolysers near the city of Kalbarri (north of Perth, Western Australia). In 2025, a first 1.5 GW phase was awarded AUD814m (USD573m) in production incentives as part of the Australian government’s Hydrogen Headstart programme. Following final investment decision (FID), construction could last 5 years and early green hydrogen and ammonia production could start in 2030, with full production expected in 2032. Once operational, the facility is expected to produce up to 1.9 Mt/year of green ammonia, which will be mainly exported to Asian markets.
