Polish national energy policy calls for the construction of 6 to 9 GWe of installed nuclear capacity based on large-scale pressurised water nuclear reactors, with the first of those units to come online around 2033.

The measure was initially approved in 2017, with a budget of approximately €9.4bn (PLN40bn), and was set to expire on 30 June 2021.

Poland, which generates 70% of its electricity from coal, has plans to build several nuclear power reactors to greatly reduce its reliance on the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel and meet climate goals,

Canada’s Cameco, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), GEH SMR Technologies Canada, (GEH SMR Canada) and Synthos Green Energy (SGE), a member of the Synthos Group signed a non-exclusive and non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to evaluate the potential establishment of a uranium fuel supply chain in Canada capable of servicing a potential fleet of BWRX-300 SMRs in Poland.

Poland uses coal as fuel for over 70% of its electricity, as well as half of its heat supply to district heating networks and industry, but is still to announce a definitive policy to fully transition away from this fossil fuel.

Poland would be able to diversify its natural gas supplies in 2022 with the opening of the Baltic pipeline which would bring gas from Norway.

In May 2021, Poland authorised the state-owned energy group Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) to operate its Turów open-pit lignite mine near the Czech and German borders until 2044.

In 2018, PGNiG agreed to import 3.5 Mt/year of LNG from Venture Global’s Calcasieu Pass LNG project.

Poland plans to auction up to 10.9 GW of offshore wind projects by 2030 and up to 28 GW of offshore wind by 2050.
