The pound hit a new three-month high of $1.2757 in overnight trading, before falling to as low as $1.2620 in early London trading. It was at $1.2653 at 1210 GMT, down 0.6% on the day.

The worldwide rig count for May 2020 was 1,176, down 338 from the 1,514 counted in April 2020

The pound is in the lower band of its recent trading range, as Britain remains one of the countries hit hardest by the pandemic.

Producers were operating the fewest oil and natural gas drilling rigs on record in the United States at 339 on May 12, the lowest level in the Baker Hughes Company’s rig count data series that dates back to 1987.

The $300 billion Public Investment Fund bought stakes in global corporate leaders such as Boeing, Facebook, Disney, Marriott and Starbucks. It also invested in two big US banks, Citigroup and Bank of America, and took holdings in oil giants BP, Total and Royal Dutch Shell.
