Russian scientific institutes will begin testing fuel rods for small modular reactors (SMRs),

The Nuward - consisting of a 340 MWe SMR plant with two pressurised water reactors (PWRs) of 170 MWe each - has been jointly developed using France's experience in PWRs.

The British government asked its nuclear regulator to start the approval process in March, having backed Rolls-Royce's $546 million funding round in November to develop the country's first SMR reactor.

Microreactors are one of the three development streams identified in a joint strategic plan setting out a path for developing and deploying SMRs released by the governments of Ontario, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Alberta in March, and Bruce in 2020 agreed with Westinghouse Electric Company to pursue applications of Westinghouse's eVinci microreactor within Canada.

The US-Latvia FIRST project will draw on expertise from across government, industry, national laboratories, and academia for policy and technical exchanges focused on topics such as workforce development, stakeholder engagement, regulatory development, and familiarisation with advanced nuclear energy technologies, such as small modular reactors (SMRs), to support Latvia’s energy independence and security and climate priorities.

Xe-100 developer X-energy announced on 4 April that its wholly-owned subsidiary, TRISO-X LLC, has selected the Horizon Center Industrial Park in Oak Ridge to site the plant, which will initially produce 8 tonnes of fuel per year - enough to support about twelve Xe-100 small modular reactors.

The eVinci microreactor is a heatpipe reactor able to deliver combined heat and power (5 MWe and up to 13MWt).
