According to the resolution, IAEA officials are not allowed to enter Iran for inspections unless the security of the country’s nuclear facilities and peaceful nuclear activities is guaranteed.

China operates 58 civil nuclear reactors and has almost 30 new builds in progress. This represents nearly half of all power reactors currently under construction worldwide.

The IAEA has redesignated Rosatom Technical Academy (Rosatom Tech) as an IAEA Collaborating Centre, signing a new four-year agreement that expands the scope of their collaboration during the recent IAEA International Conference on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and their Applications.

On the margins of this year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and OPEC Fund Director General Abdulhamid Alkhalifa signed Practical Arrangements on Cooperation in the Area of Climate Adaptation to enhance collaborative efforts by both entities to develop and implement joint projects on climate adaptation.

Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin as part of the IAEA’s efforts to prevent a nuclear accident during the current military conflict in Ukraine, stressing the urgent need to establish a safety and security protection zone around the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).

The nuclear power plant - the largest in Europe - is still being operated by its Ukrainian staff, but has been under the control of Russian military forces since the start of March.

Likhachev and Grossi “paid particular attention to the state of affairs at the Zaporozhye NPP, including taking into account the IAEA Director General’s intention to organise a technical mission of the IAEA specialists to this NPP”. Likhachev “stressed ensuring safe operation of nuclear installations in the broadest sense possible was an absolute priority for the Russian side and for the Russian nuclear industry”.
