India has emerged as a key buyer of Russian energy in the wake of the invasion, scooping up millions of barrels of discounted crude shunned by Europe and the US.

Russia's crude exports rose by 140,000 b/d on the month to average 3.36 million b/d from Aug 1-16 to remain above pre-war levels for the fifth month in a row,

India currently has 22 operating nuclear reactors, totalling some 6795 MWe of capacity. A further eight units, totalling just over 6000 MWe, are under construction, and the Indian government is committed to growing nuclear capacity as part of its massive infrastructure development programme.

Now the increase in Russian coal is pushing out US, South African, Australian, and some higher CV Indonesian coal.

India's coal based generation accounted for 69.9% of the country's overall electricity generation of 1,490.277 billion units in fiscal year 2021-22 (April-March), a growth of 9.5% from a year ago.

In May, India imported 819,000 barrels per day (bpd), from 277,000 bpd in April and 33,000 bpd a year ago. Russia is now the second biggest supplier to India, replacing Saudi Arabia, while Iraq continues to be the largest.

The oil ministry said June 29 that India would allow operators to sell locally-produced crude in the domestic market without restrictions from Oct. 1, but restrictions on exporting locally-produced crude would remain.

China spent $18.9 billion on Russian oil, gas and coal in the three months to the end of May, almost double the amount a year earlier, latest customs data show. Meanwhile, India shelled out $5.1 billion in the same period, more than five times the value of a year ago.
