U.S. CO2 EMISSIONS UP
In 2021, U.S. energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions increased by 296 million metric tons (MMmt), or 6%, compared with 2020 levels.

U.S. ZERO EMISSIONS RISKS
Modelling Princeton conducted on the path to a net-zero future showed not much, if any, increase in gas-fired generation capacity starting now, with small increases in some areas to manage reliability needs from rapid coal retirements offset by retirements of older gas plants in other areas.

"Germany has achieved its 2020 climate target," Economy and Energy Minister Peter Altmaier said. Compared to 1990, 2020 emissions dropped 40.8%.

U.S. CO2 EMISSIONS WILL UP
Economic growth and the lessening of pandemic-related restrictions result in more energy consumption and associated CO2 emissions. EIA expects total energy-related CO2 emissions to increase to 4.8 billion metric tons in 2021 and 4.9 billion metric tons in 2022.

Global electricity demand in 2020 is projected to fall by around 2%. With the recovery of the global economy in 2021, global electricity demand is expected to grow by around 3%.

Brent prices will average $49/b in 2021, up from an expected average of $43/b in the fourth quarter of 2020. Brent prices will average $47/b in the first quarter of 2021 and rise to an average of $50/b by the fourth quarter.

Since 1990, GHG emissions in the EU have been steadily declining, with emissions in the EU 27 falling to 24% below their 1990 levels in 2019.

Russia ratified the Paris agreement on climate change in September 2019. Russia’s energy-related CO2 emissions in 2019 were around 20% below their 1990 level, at around 1 750 MtCO2.
